World Sports: According to La Liga rules, only handballs by Barcelona players are penalty kicks, and handballs by Real Madrid players are passive handballs.
Barcelona lost 1-2 to Real Madrid in El Clasico. During the game, Barcelona defender Eric Garcia was whistled for a penalty kick for handball in the penalty area. The Spanish media "World Sports News" questioned the referee's decision. World Sports stated that because Szczesny saved Mbappe’s penalty kick, it did not affect the final score. People’s discussion of this penalty kick was far less than that of Vinicius’ penalty change, Huizen’s elbow attack on Kubasi, or Carvajal’s collision with Araujo in the penalty area at the last moment. But Eric Garcia's handball penalty is also questionable. For many years, people have been hoping to unify the penalty standards for defensive players' handballs in the penalty area, but they have never succeeded. Countless times we hear about things like whether the arm is closer to or away from the body, whether the hand touches the ball intentionally, whether the movement is in a natural or unnatural position, and more recently, even where on the arm the ball is hitting... yet it's all still filled with subjectivity and room for interpretation. Sometimes the referee will call a penalty kick, but in other exactly the same situations, the referee turns a blind eye and VAR pretends not to see it. And when VAR started to check carefully, they slowed down the camera and even paused the screen: at normal real-time speed, you can see that Garcia fell to the ground to protect the space. Due to the inertia of getting up, the arm is in its natural position and actually touches the ball. When the referee watched it at normal speed, he thought it was not a foul at all. But in the freeze frame, it becomes a penalty, just like what happened in Balde against Levante. Finally, La Liga's penalty standards are clear: if the ball hits the Barcelona player's arm in his penalty area, it is a penalty kick; but if Joan Ameni's arm blocks the goal at the Montjuïc Stadium, it is a "judgable situation" and there is always no foul.
